Kim Seong Eun's Notes on Korean Heritage Jewelry
Twenty-five years of observations, standards, and craftsmanship behind Korean heritage jewelry.
The dwikkoji is a traditional Korean ornament placed into the back of a chignon or upswept hairstyle. If the binyeo forms a central axis through the hair, the dwikkoji adds symbol, light, and movement to a style that has already been secured. Though often smaller in scale, it completes the space behind the head and reveals its quiet beauty most fully when the wearer turns.
Dwikkoji have long incorporated auspicious forms—flowers, butterflies, birds, bats, coral, and jade. Several may be worn together for ceremonial splendor, or a single piece may create a restrained point of emphasis. When fitted with trembler elements, the ornament responds delicately to breath and movement, giving life to metal.
NASCHENKA has brought the dwikkoji beyond the museum and into contemporary dress. We reconsider the length of the pin, scale, and center of gravity so that it can be worn not only with a traditional chignon but also with a low bun, half-up style, or compact updo. Some designs move between the roles of binyeo and dwikkoji, finding a new identity through the way women wear their hair today.
NASCHENKA's signature three-peony dwikkoji has served for years almost as a heraldic emblem of the house. The peony represents prosperity, honor, and abundance. Yet the NASCHENKA peony does more than illustrate a symbol. Silver sheet is cut, hammered, and layered into petals; natural stones and touches of gold bring the flower into sculptural bloom upon the head.
The dwikkoji reflects a distinctly Korean sense of beauty that does not reveal everything from the front. It is the detail discovered only when one approaches or looks again—the small element capable of changing an entire impression. This is why NASCHENKA continues to design it.
