Royal jewelry is not simply jewelry of greater splendor. It is the point at which a culture concentrates its most valued materials, techniques, symbols, and order. Phoenixes and dragons, peonies and plum blossoms, stones of many colors, and trembling ornaments expressed more than beauty: they conveyed royal dignity, peace, prosperity, and protection.
The ornaments worn by queens, queen dowagers, crown princesses, and members of the royal household carried precise meanings through their placement, scale, and motifs. A frontal cheopji, a binyeo crossing the hair, and dwikkoji or trembler ornaments balancing the back each served a distinct purpose while forming a complete hierarchy. To understand royal adornment is not to add as much decoration as possible; it is to understand proportion and order.
