The beauty of Korea cannot be fixed within a single form. It exists in the brilliance of royal gold, in the moonlit surface of pale jade, and in the minute hammer marks left by an artisan on silver. Splendor and restraint, precision and naturalness, do not cancel one another; their ability to coexist within a single composition is one of the great strengths of Korean aesthetics.
Korean heritage jewelry did not merely copy nature. Peonies, plum blossoms, lotuses, butterflies, bats, phoenixes, and dragons were translated into line and form, then filled with human wishes for fortune, peace, longevity, and love. A beautiful motif was also a language of meaning. To wear an ornament was to keep not only its form, but its blessing close to the body.
