Kim Seong Eun's Notes on Korean Heritage Jewelry
Twenty-five years of observations, standards, and craftsmanship behind Korean heritage jewelry.
Silver creates both light and structure in Korean heritage jewelry. More restrained than gold yet rich in depth, it responds sensitively to the artisan's hand—to cutting, hammering, bending, chasing, and soldering. The quiet tone that develops over time reveals silver as a living metal rather than an inert surface.
NASCHENKA works primarily in 925 sterling silver, a material that preserves the beauty of silver while providing the structure and durability required for jewelry. Yet the number “925” alone does not determine the quality of a piece. The result depends on who cuts the silver, how its thickness is chosen, how heat is controlled, and with what precision every form is raised and assembled.
Each NASCHENKA piece is individually made by highly experienced master artisans, many with four to five decades of practice. They cut silver sheet and wire, hammer volume into flat metal, raise petals and phoenix feathers, and join minute components with flame. Unlike a mechanically stamped surface, hand-worked silver retains subtle hammer marks, gentle curves, and a slightly different rhythm in every piece. These are not defects. They are evidence of authentic handcraft.
NASCHENKA's signature antique-toned finish is likewise neither tarnish nor prior wear. It is an intentional treatment designed to reveal the depth and detail of traditional silverwork. Shadow remains in the recessed areas while light touches the raised surfaces, allowing every petal, engraved line, and layered form to become visible.
Silver may appear rigid, but it has a natural degree of flexibility. Because a binyeo or dwikkoji is shaped by hand to work with the form of the head and hair, it may not resemble a perfectly machined line. It should never, however, be twisted forcefully into the hair like a wooden stick. Secure the hairstyle first, then place the ornament as the final element.
Silver is a material that ages with its owner and rewards proper care. We recommend gently wiping it with a soft, dry cloth rather than using a general silver-cleaning solution, and limiting exposure to air when it is not being worn. Fine silverwork is not a seasonal accessory. When made and cared for well, it becomes a work of craft that can be preserved and passed on.
